• itchy feet | 25 Nov 2011, 10:18 Skiing in Val d'Isere We had THE best snow in Val d'Isere - amazing slopes, great hotel (Hôtel Les Sorbiers) and great crepes from Crepe Val's. A helicopter ride over the resort really topped off the experience!

  • Anne Slue | 25 Nov 2011, 10:09 Skiing on top of the world in Chamonix After a few days on the fabulous pistes of Chamonix we decided to get a little more adventurous. La Vallee Blanche is a 22km glacier which originates in the shadow of the peak of Mont Blanc. After two cable cars and a lift you arrive at a viewing station at the top of Aguille du Midi. On the day we did it there was a fabulous cloud inversion that made it feel like we were walking on the roof of the world. You have to have a guide to do this off-piste run since crevasses are scattered at random for the length of it. The first thing your guide will do is help you on with your harness and rope the team together. Nervous yet? Thus attached you shuffle precariously across a steep ice bridge to reach the start of the run. The glacier itself is simply spectacular with brutal ridges rising out of a pure sea of white. The initial traverses are tough on the legs and are followed by a tricky mogul field (this would easily be graded as a solid red and requires experience with big moguls to get down it). Passing a magnificent ice field is your signal that you're about halfway and the last 10km are a glorious cruise across unmarked snow. A word of warning - the glacier has receded since the gondola station was built and your day will end with a sweat-inducing climb up countless flights of stairs - the one tiny bit of discomfort in an otherwise spectacular day.
